What is a medicine distribution point?

What function does it serve and what are the differences compared to a normal pharmacy?

The medicine distribution point is an establishment intended only for the provision of medicines for general use and first aid supplies. It is not a pharmacy. Medicine distribution points can be opened in municipalities, hamlets, and villages with fewer than 5000 inhabitants where the pharmacy provided for in the pharmacy distribution plan has not been opened (Art.6, Law 362/91). The management of a medicine distribution point is entrusted to the owner of a public or private pharmacy, with preference given to the owner of the pharmacy closest to it. In the event of a waiver, the municipality takes over the medicine distribution point. The medicine distribution point is not an autonomous establishment and must be operated like a separate branch of the pharmacy that manages it. It has its own register for the entry and exit of controlled drugs and has its own business licence.
